第二次世界大戦後のヨーロッパで庶民の足として普及したキャビンスクーター (バブルカー) 。西ドイツ (当時) のFMRメッサーシュミットはその最大手メーカーで、もともとは航空機メーカーだった。1953年に前後タンデム2人乗りのKR175を発売し、その発展型KR200と共に大ヒットとなったのだった。エンジンはザックス製2サイクル単気筒で、初期型KR175は173cc、55年登場のKR200では9.7PS/5000rpmを発揮する191ccに拡大されていた。またプレクシグラスのトップを持つタイプとカブリオレがあり、後にロードスターのKR201や後輪を2輪として493ccの2気筒エンジンを搭載した、TG500 (ティーガー) も登場。KR200は1964年まで生産された。

le mouton noir & co.: flow shelf
new york-based firm le mouton noir & co have applied the idea of a ship to ‘flow shelf’, a floating storage unit.
the wooden furniture piece is carved from plywood with the side of the material exposed to show the layers.
the raised edges keep the items on the shelf from falling off while also referencing the hull of the boat.
when boxes and small items are placed upon its surface, ‘flow’ resembles something similar to that of a cargo ship.

happening from the 19th until the 22nd of may at the international contemporary furniture fair (ICFF).

folding corner ladder by company & company
made for small domestic spaces, barcelona-based design studio company & company have sent us images of ‘corner ladder’.
the redeveloped useful tool is made to fold not only flat, but also compresses horizontally into a single pole.
the hinges and dowels make it easy to open and close while the wooden device maintains its structural stability.
to make space for the folded rungs, the rails have indented space, allowing for the frame to unite into a single bar.

mut design: drops concrete tiles for entic design
the geometric motif is a depiction of a japanese pond as raindrops fall on the water’s surface. four styles — one only with the circular
droplet pattern, and the others with gold fish, lotus plants and water lilies — fit together to create a variety of combinations depending
on the direction and placement of the individual pieces.
made as an encaustic tile, all the blocks of color are placed separately and have depth, ensuring that the design does not wear with time
as is the case with the painted variety. the entire structure of the product is 2 cm (0.8 inches) thick. the first layer is made of portland cement,
marble sand and pigments which are poured into a mold to form the top decorative element. the second has more portland cement and sand,
absorbing the excess liquid from the top layer. another covering of cement and sand porosity are applied to the bottom for easy adhesion.
due to the composition, no baking is necessary; the tiles harden without heat.

吉岡徳仁によるグラスイタリアのLuminus | DA
日本のデザイナー吉岡徳仁は、ミラノで開催されるミラノサローネ国際家具見本市で、ほとんど目に見えないテーブルを発表した。
Luminusと名付けられたその無垢のガラスのテーブルは、イタリアのブランドであるグラスイタリアのためにデザインされた。
吉岡は透明でほとんどそこにないかのようなデザインを得意とする

2012年ロンドンオリンピック、そしてパラリンピック開催を記念して、ポール・スミスが、英マン島郵便局より、切手プロジェクトへの参加依頼を受け、ロンドンオリンピックの記念切手を販売中です!
過去に、自転車レーサーを目指していた時期もあったポールが、スポーツに対しての”情熱”を表した記念切手。
この記念切手にデザインされた競技は、テニスや水泳、さらにはヨットレースやロードレース、全部で7つの競技が描かれています!

hamonic+masson: villiot rapee
french based architecture firm hamonic + masson has developed ‘villiot-rapée’, a project that is a stone’s throws away from the gare de lyon in paris, france,
whose business district was designed in the 1960s and 1970s by the architect louis arretche. the site is directly connected to the seine and is predominantly residential.
the project embraces new concepts of living together primarily based on generous outdoor spaces, both private and communal.
the structure starts with the premise of being in contact with the outdoors, which is generally the privilege of a few city-dwellers.
located near the seven-story blocks of flats these twelve-storey buildings have a 25-30 square meter terrace that winds around the living space at oblique angles.
the vertical typology represents height as the upper levels stack on top of each other. from the interior, the mesh and colored glass surfaces create
a feeling of privacy, within a contained atmosphere.

torafu architects: skydeck for ishinomaki laboratory
‘skydeck’, a small table which is made to hook onto handrails of balconies or lookout points, has been created by
japanese firm torafu architects. the functional surface is manufactured by ishinomaki laboratory which was established by
designers and other individuals in the japanese city of ishinomaki when it was devastated by the tsunami on march 11, 2011.
this collaboration between the initiative and torafu ensures that the portable design is manufactured by the people of this region
as a means of supporting the local community while making the product commercially available to the consumer market.
made from canadian red cedar, the ‘skydeck’ offers a surface in which to rest your mobile phone or radio, or can act as a counter
when you’re out on your balcony enjoying a drink. floating in the air, the ‘skydeck’ stretches a narrow balcony space out past its boundaries,
just a little bit further…

bentley EXP 9F and the new class of super SUVs
at beijing motor show 2012, bentley has debuted its ‘EXP 9F’, a luxury SUV concept that represents the company’s entry
into the newly coined ‘super SUV’ class of motor vehicles, all of which have been first presented at the exhibition
(more information on the ‘super SUV’ vehicle segment at the bottom of the article).
modeled aesthetically after the ‘blower bentleys’ of the 1920s, the design was conceptualized around a 6-litre, twin-turbocharged
W12 petrol engine and 8-speed transmission, although bentley is also considering a petrol V8 as well as a V6 plug-in hybrid
powertrain for possible implementation. even with the V6 hybrid, bentley reports the vehicle would be capable of accelerating
from 0 to 60 mph (0-100km/hr) in under five seconds, with a range of 30km (18mi) and CO2 emissions of 209 g/mi (130g/km).
