infrared architects: 313-315 symbiosis seesaw
greek architecture team infrared has created ‘313-315 symbiosis’, an installation at the XV biennale de la mediterranee-thessaloniki.
located on the third floor of an abandoned hotel (currently a temporary gallery space), a seesaw exists simultaneously in rooms
313, 314 and 315 by penetrating through the walls. the holes in both partitions are large enough for the metal shaft to move freely,
but cuts off all visual contact between the people on the two ends. this gives the players on opposite sides the feeling of interaction
and dependence.
7.5 meters (25 feet) long, the metal pole has a bright red MDF seat, urging people to sit and play. to contrast the seesaw,
the vestibules at the two ends are painted white, while the center room with the joint mechanism has a rough, textured surface from
the remains of the hotel’s old wallpaper. to contrast the outer suites, the light has been kept dim.
because of the layout and length of the spaces, the project can never be viewed in its entirety.
